The RedSuns, led by Ryosuke Takahashi, are introduced as a team that talks about racing each other after they defeat the competition at Akina. Ryosuke drives a Mazda Savanna RX-7 Type-R FC, and his team's arrival prompts the local street racers to defend their mountain. After Takumi Fujiwara defeats Takeshi Nakazato of the NightKids in an unofficial downhill race, Ryosuke takes notice and later tells Takumi that his father's AE86 has been custom-tuned and modified. Ryosuke then challenges Takumi to a race in three weeks. When the AE86's engine breaks down during an encounter with Emperor team leader Kyoichi Sudo, Ryosuke offers to lend Takumi one of his cars, but Takumi declines. At the showdown, Ryosuke offers to team with Takumi on defeating Kyoichi, but Takumi again declines. During the race, Ryosuke lets Kyoichi pass him and then follows closely. Ryosuke and Takumi use the gutter trick to overtake Kyoichi. Ryosuke overtakes Takumi at the five hairpin turns, but Bunta explains to the watchers that the FC's tires are losing their grip and that it is up to Takumi to compete against himself. Takumi undertakes Ryosuke on the last hairpin turn to win the race. Afterward, Ryosuke offers Takumi to join his new racing team, Project D.
