The story begins with high school student Akio Asakura encountering a black Porsche 911 Turbo nicknamed 'Blackbird' on the Wangan. Unable to keep up, he visits a junkyard and is drawn to an old blue Nissan Fairlady Z (S30) with a highly tuned L28 engine. The car is supposedly 'cursed,' extremely difficult to drive, with a history of multiple accidents, earning it the name 'The Devil Z.' Akio restores it and races the Blackbird, crashing multiple times. He meets Eriko Asakura, sister of the original driver who died in a car accident while racing the Blackbird. Other racers include Reina Akikawa, a model and TV host who drives a Nissan Skyline GT-R (R32), and Jun Kitami, the original creator of both the Devil Z and Blackbird. The central plot revolves around the rivalry between the Devil Z and Blackbird for Wangan superiority.

In Their Own Story

The series revolves around street racing on Tokyo's Bayshore Route (Wangan) and other roads on the Shuto Expressway network. Akio Asakura, a skilled racer, switches from his red Nissan Fairlady Z (Z31) to the Devil Z after losing to Tatsuya Shima's Blackbird. Shima is a skilled surgeon who drives a black Porsche 911 Turbo (930), later upgrading to a 964 nicknamed 'Blackbird.' He commissions Jun Kitami to boost its output to 700 hp to compete with Akio's 620 hp Devil Z. Reina Akikawa, after encountering Akio, modifies her R32 Skyline GT-R at YM Speed and becomes a street racer. She crashes while racing Akio, leading to a friendship. The new story arc, Wangan Midnight: C1 Runner, features Shinji Ogishima and Nobu Setoguchi, who drive Mazda RX-7s along the Shuto Expressway as part of the GT Cars project.
